Roger Maris and Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle, known as the “M&M Boys”, New York Yankees teammates Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were the focus of the baseball world in 1961. The two superstars were each vying to break Babe Ruth’s single-season record of 60 home runs, and the baseball media could not get enough of it. Maris and Mantle were neck-and-neck in home runs until August, when Maris passed Mantle in the race for the final time. Maris hit his 61st home run on the final day of the season, wrapping up his second consecutive American League MVP Award. Mantle, who unlike Maris would make the National Baseball Hall of Fame, finished the season with 54 homers, although his batting average of .317 was much higher than Maris’ .269 clip. The photo features the two Yankees greats smiling in their Yankee pinstripes holding bats over their shoulders. Mantle and Maris signed across their images with a blue marker.
