An ashtray constructed of duralumin recovered from the crash site of the British R101 airship, measuring 5 1/4 x 3 in., with two slotted indentations on each side with which to hold cigarettes, and the imprinted legend: 'METAL FROM R 101 / THOS W. WARD LTD.' The R101 hydrogen-filled airship crashed in October, 1930 while flying over Beauvais, France, killing a total of 48 people of the 54 on board. Thomas W. Ward was a scrap metal merchant and his company salvaged what they could from the wreck. Very good condition.
