A unique item, an original brown leather flight jacket, marked ‘Twenty Third Fighter Group Seventy Fifth Fighter Squadron’ in red paint on the back. Set between the text is the image of a tiger wearing a top hat in the colors of the American flag bursting through a blue and white circle, the tattered remains of a Japanese flag hanging from its claws. Appearing at the collar is the maker’s tag indicating the manufacturer as The Lakeland Co. of Minneapolis. Attached to this tag is another, giving the size as ‘7-8’. The size of this jacket is the most interesting, as it was clearly made for a child, probably that of a U.S. soldier, almost certainly belonging to the 75th Fighter Squadron. Fitted with red, white, and blue cotton lining and a brass zipper by ‘TALON’. Intriguingly, attached to the zipper is a whistle made by ‘Aristo’ from Japan. This jacket was once well loved evidenced from the notable wear to the leather throughout, which still remains quite supple. The 75th Fighter Squadron was assigned to the 23rd Fighter Group and served under the leadership of General Claire Lee Chennault. While in the China-Burma-India-theatre the squadron was given the mission to attack and destroy Japan by way of strafing airfields, troops, and supply depots all while maintain air superiority. After their disbanding, the American Volunteer Group, also known as the ‘Flying Tigers’, joined the 75th Squadron. The squadron would eventually receive the Presidential Unit Citation for their service and impressive track record during the war.
