Luba, DR Kongo

Holz. H 30,5 cm.
Die Ankunft des Christentums ab Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts in Kongo veränderte die traditionellen Glaubensvorstellungen und kultischen Bräuche und machte Platz für neue religiöse Strömungen aus Europa.
Kruzifixe, Christusfiguren, Heiligenstatuetten und Mariendarstellungen mit religiösem Charakter veranschaulichen die einzigartige Bewegung, mit der die lokale Bevölkerung Elemente, die ihnen fremd waren, in sich aufnahm und neu interpretierte: Glauben, Rituale, Erzählungen, Darstellungen.
Eine Aneignung, die sich in der Anpassungsfähigkeit und Kreativität der Künstler der Region widerspiegelt.
In diesem Zusammenhang wurde das Marienbild vor allem durch die Missionskongregationen ab dem 16. Jahrhundert mit der Betonung der Heiligenverehrung popularisiert.
