Description
Canadian. 1890s. Cast iron. A nickel plated Traders Bank of Canada with inner compartment and ephemera included. Trader banks were given on loan to families to encourage the practice of saving. Once coins were inserted, only the Trader's Bank representative could unlock the bank to then deposit the coins. As a savings device, it proved to be an unwieldy process and the program was quickly abandoned. Following this, many of the banks were said to have been destroyed. The inner metal box insert has four compartments, each bearing a different stamped number to identify the family member/depositor. This bank is missing one of its dividers. 8.75"H x 10.5"L x 5.12"W.
