Description
black designs on brick red, 5" tall, excellent. ..Fred Tschirner and William A. Long founded Clifton Art Pottery in 1905 in Newark, New Jersey. Initially, they produced pottery influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. They introduced another line in 1906—Indian Ware, modeled after southwestern Native American designs. Clifton only made art pottery from 1905 to 1911. Fred Tschirner, a university-educated ceramicist, and William A. Long, formerly of Lonhuda Pottery and the Denver China and Pottery Company, formed the Clifton Art Pottery. The Arts and Crafts movement heavily influenced the ceramics they produced at the outset, but it was the company's glazing techniques that set them apart from other potteries. Clifton Indian Ware, introduced in 1905, was made from New Jersey red clay. The interior had a high-gloss black glaze to protect the clay from water. Styled after traditional Native American designs, the exterior of the pottery featured painted black designs against a terracotta background. Long left Clifton in 1909 and went to work at Weller Pottery. He later worked for Roseville, as well as American Encaustic Tile. He passed away in 1918. In 1911, Clifton switched to the production of floor and wall tiles. In 1914, the name changed to Clifton Porcelain and Tile Company, and the pottery was no more.
