Galanos Dress, 1957

James Galanos (1924-2016) was the only son of Greek born parents. In 1944, he became a general assistant at the New York East 49th Street emporium of Hattie Carnegie. Galanos was known for using the finest materials and impeccable construction, often called the ‘American Couturier’. With a career that spanned five decades, he dressed Hollywood stars, royalty, and political figures of the day.

Grey wool dress with notched lapel, 1/2-length sleeves, and a complex skirt of vertical tabs sewn in multiple layers into the waistline. The dress closes down the center front with a zipper in the skirt and a single button at the center front bodice.

Condition:

The overall condition is good with pilling under both arms, small hole under one skirt panel, some of the seams in the skirt have popped open in the complex arrangments of the vertical skirt panels, two small holes in the back near the waistband, and fraying on the interior seam allowances.
