Description
Oil on canvas board of Zebulon Montgomery Pike (1779-1813) Brigadier General with historic Santa Fe and New Mexico ties. He was a noted explorer after whom Pikes Peak in Colorado in named. The painting consists of vignettes of an Indian battle and gold mining with a central portrait topped by an American flag. The lettering on the painting notes November 1806, that is the year he lead 2 expeditions first through Louisiana Purchase Territory then into New Mexico and Texas. 29" x 36" and framed to 32 - 1/2" x 39 - 1/2". Signed and dated lower right. Possibly "A.A. Poe Nov. 1906". Backed with canvas with some restoration present. Pike was killed in the Battle of York in April of 1813.
