"The Reproof" antique steel engraving by Joseph Desmannez after painting by Pierre Olivier Joseph Coomans, lettered below image with the title, production details, with names of artists closely below the image, “J. Coomans, Pinxt. / J. Desmannez, Sculpt. Published by Selmar Hess, New York, 1886. The steel plate was engraved for the "Art Journal" 1871, reprinted from the plate in the 1880s by Virtue & Co., London, and Selmar Hess, New York.
A woman in Grecian costume seated under a vine scolds a young boy on the veranda of a house overlooking the sea.
Printed on high quality heavy paper, design 7" x 9.1/2" [178mm x 245mm], the entire plate is 9.1/8" x 12.1/2" [232mm x 317mm]; a little aging, a little corner wear, very good condition [see photo].
Pierre Olivier Joseph Coomans (1816-1889) was Belgian painter and illustrator, known as one of Belgium's most celebrated 19th-century painters of historic subjects, genre scenes, and landscapes.
Joseph Arnold Desmannez (1826-1902), was Belgian engraver; active in Antwerp.
