In one binder, the letters span from Jan. 1862 through Sept. 1865, all with written content narratives or comments, one letter including Lincoln assassination... "The sad news that reached our city on the 15th of April of the death of our beloved president has cast a gloom over the whole city...", a CSA letter with cover (lacking stamp), together with 35 civil war era sheet music, an 1863 handwritten Valentine note or poem, an 1885 printing of 'Corps Badges' adopted by the United States Army in 1865, a broadside, circular and cover announcing a ULS patriotic lecture by Prof. Amasa McCoy on June 25, 1964 in Illinois, an 1804 letter in reference to the welfare of a slave named Congo, and an 1840 Macao letter about the opium wars in China, likely by a British woman.
The letters in varying sizes, some in multiple pages, one accompanied by its original transmittal cover, varied subject matter, binder measures 15.5x12.5in., in generally good condition with expected wear and varying degrees of issues given age and use. Sheet music with varying degrees of toning, staining and foxing, some with edge and/or corner losses, some closed tears.
Provenance: Part of a civil war collection of a Sullivan County, NY gentleman 90 years young. The collection spans 50 years and was acquired from shows, dealers and private collections throughout the east coast and midwest.
