Description
Rare Challenge Iceberg Cherry Wood Ice box Circa 1896. Originally from a mansion on Sheldon Avenue in Grand Haven, Michigan this icebox would have only been found in the finest homes, hotels, soda fountains and country stores of the late 1800's. This two-part sideboard form ice box has heavy cast brass Aesthetic Movement hardware. Embossed brass nameplate reads, "'Challenge Iceberg,' Challenge Corn Planter Co., Grand Haven, Mich." Back plates are marked, "Iceberg." Base of box has ice compartment with door, two doors for cooling, center cold water tank with brass pull and spigot, swivel brass glass holder located below spigot, and three drawers with brass pulls for storing utensils. The base has two turned columns on sides. Each end has four molded recessed panels. Upper portion has two cabinets on either side with beveled glass doors with lock. Cabinets are supported with turn posts on either side. Center portion of top has stick and ball decorated crown mold and aesthetic movement slanted corner mirror. A very scarce icebox and the best we've seen in over 50 years. Measures 80" high X 50 1/2" wide X 23 3/8" deep. Top measures 36 1/2" high. Base measures 43 1/2" high. Also included is a group of original and rare paper catalogs and advertisements: 1889 and 1893 catalogues, trade card and a 6 7/8" X 9 1/2" paper advertisement.
Condition
Condition- Fine original condition. All original hardware. The base has some age separation of wood. Mirrors have some silver loss. Comes with key to upper cabinet doors. Base doors do not come with keys. See photos.
