Description
For your consideration is this late 1890s Brunton Brass Nautical Compass made in India. D.W. Brunton created the Brunton Natural Sine compass, a type of pocket compass, in 1894. Sailors, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts frequently used this portable, reliable, and precise compass. The Brunton compass is renowned for its distinctive design, which incorporates a sapphire jewel bearing and a rare earth magnet, as well as its ability to precisely measure angles and inclinations due to the level set that is housed inside the compass. Today, the Brunton company still makes compasses and other outdoor equipment. The compass is engraved on the top reading, "Natural Sine / India". When opened, it shows the compass, the level and a mirror. One piece can be flipped up and used as a viewfinder. The compass is in good working condition except for the level in the compass as it has been broken off its housing and rolls around the interior of the compass. The compass measures 3 3/16" L x 2 3/4" W. The glass mirror in the compass is broken.
