Item Details
Description
For your consideration is this framed, Philip R. Goodwin (1881-1935) print titled, "When Action Counts" from 1923. Philip Russell Goodwin's natural born talent for illustration became evident very early on and by age eleven he had already sold works to Collier's magazine. Goodwin studied under Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia from 1899-1900. He agreed to his master's belief that an artist should spend time in the environment which he is illustrating. Goodwin also studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students League in New York. Goodwin's illustrations were published in magazines such as Harper's Monthly and Harper's Weekly, Scribner's and celebrated books such as "Call of the Wild" by Jack London and "African Game Trails" by Theodore Roosevelt. The print shows two men on a wood log raft, drifting down the river. One is steering while the other aims his rifle at a bear on the shore. The river looks fast as small rapids crash over the wood logs and onto the men in the boat. The men are wearing plaid flannel shirts, cowboy hats, vests and jeans, the typical western wear for those days. In the background it shows towering, forested mountains with a golden hue from the late afternoon sun shinning down on them. In the bottom right hand corner of the print, it shows the artists signature reading, "Philip R. Goodwin" in black lettering. On the very bottom of the print it shows the title reading, "When Action Counts". The piece is set in a thin wood frame and set behind glass. The art and frame show good condition with no signs of obvious damage and slight wear to the frame from its age and use over the years. The piece measures 19 5/8" L x 26" W.
