Description
American, 19th century. A large finely carved cigar or trade store Indian in walnut, overall Indian with elaborate headdress and gown, belt with knife and pipe, left hand raised shading eyes, right hand missing either a rifle or tobacco leaves; ht. 84, wd. 22, dp. 17 inches. Overall good condition. Age splitting throughout Indian and base, restorations to base to prevent any further splitting. Loss to central headdress feather. No signs or remains of paint. Provenance: Ex Bob Stuart Collection. Indian was purchased from Bob Stuart from and general store in Brown County Indiana in which the carved Indian was for over 50 years prior to his purchase. Manner of Samuel Robbs and Thomas Brooks.
