Description
The Tour de France is the world's premier cycling event, and has been held every July since 1903 (with the exception of the Vichy France years of WWII). This charming poster was created by liquor brand, Pernod to celebrate the 1958 Tour. Blank spaces would have been filled in by hand by spectators as they followed along with the rankings. This poster was likely meant to hang in bars and restaurants. The Tour de France is iconic in the world of sports. This famous cycling race began in 1903, as a commercial promotion for a failing sports magazine, L'Auto. L'Auto's chief cycling journalist, Geo Lefevre came up with the idea of a six-day race of the sort popular on the track, but instead to be held all around France. Long-distance cycle races were a popular means to sell more newspapers at the time, but nothing of the length that Lefevre suggested had ever been attempted. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
