Description
Large sculpture of Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire after Neo-Classical artist Jean-Antoine Houdon who represented the aging Voltaire as an Immortal with a large robe and a ribbon around his forehead. This sculpture epitomizes the refined method of casting made at the French foundry Barbedienne. Carved on the left side of the base: Houdon. Fecit 1781. On the lower back: F. Barbedienne Fondeur. Includes the foundry stamp: Reduction Mecanique.
