First Nations Metis Embroidered Suede Saddle Bag

Item Details

Description

First Nations, Canada, likely Cree / Metis people, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful pannier style saddlebag made from leather and suede with silk embroidery floss on the cover flaps. The large pockets are lined with cotton cloth and have leather tie straps, and 3 slits along the band for attaching the to rear of the saddle and rest on the horse's hips. The Canadian mission schools encouraged embroidery as a domestic pursuit, and women specialized in silk embroidery which primarily consisted of floral motifs. Size folded in half: 23" L x 10.5" W (58.4 cm x 26.7 cm); full length: 46" L x 10.5" W (116.8 cm x 26.7 cm)
