Very Rare Apotheosis of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington Early 19th Century Quilt - the toile quilt and its center theme are printed on bleached cotton; centerpiece image printed by copperplate inked with red dye. This toile quilt features images of - Washington and Benjamin Franklin representing the new nation's political and intellectual freedom; the "Temple of Fame"; Washington standing in a chariot drawn by leopards; classically gowned woman wearing a feather headdress; marching soldiers beneath American and French banners; an Indian putto whose horn has a striped banner; another banner bearing Franklin's "Don't Tread on Me"; above his head is a banner with his motto, "Where liberty dwells, there is my country."; Athene, the goddess of Wisdom bearing an oval shield with 13 stars; others. Surrounding the center ground are bands, first and third bands are printed dot fabric, sides and bottom panels of the quilt are clusters of delicate floral bouquets alternating with red cotton fabric bands, bottom left and right corners are floral sprig designs. The center image is listed in the Smithsonian Reference book, “Threads of History” by Collins found on page 51 image number 8. The quilt measures 92" W x 84" H. Very few sporadic small stains, no holes or repairs, some sporadic, very minor, fading.
