On the occasion of the betrothal of Philip II and Isabella of Valois, the painter Sofonisba Anguissola was summoned to the Spanish court. As Isabella's lady-in-waiting and tutor to the infantas, she painted the queen on several occasions. Aged only twenty-five, Sofonisba arrived in Madrid in the winter of 1560 to become lady-in-waiting to the new queen and paint her portraits, such as "Isabella of Valois holding a portrait of Philip II" (now in the Museo del Prado), which inspired the celluloid painting in question, executed in the last quarter of the 19th century and characterised by the desire to detail details in the manner of a miniaturist.
