Description
Ca. first half 20thC. Very good condition overall with no apparent repairs. Carved and painted wood, heart shaped face with drill hole decoration. Very good, with age-appropriate wear, and wood losses. Just mask measures approx. 8 1/2" high. Purchased at Bonham's Auction of the Gelbard Collection on 11/13/07 (lot #2568). Originally of a West Coast collection comprised of pieces all collected before 1939-1945 at the latest.

A very early true Kwele mask though not as early as some of the most famous such as the Museum of Natural History mask. Much more provenance/information is available if requested, we have printed email communication between Robert Nooter and Bonhams staff discussing this mask and others like it at great lengths. Exhibited at four locations in 2003-2005. Published in Bourgeois and Rodolitz: Remnants of Ritual, Ethnos, 2003. Ex-Nooter Coll.
