On his 80th birthday, Tony Duquette’s Malibu ranch burned to the ground destroying 21 structures and much of Duquette’s collections of antiques and his own original works of art. Because of this tragic loss, Tony created an exhibition for the Armand Hammer museum of art and cultural center in Westwood, California called “The Phoenix Rising from Its Flames”. The central phoenix was 28 feet tall, along with 24 other phoenix sculptures in three descending sizes. The egg shape signified rebirth and continuance. Overall: 60 x 29 x 18 in. (152.4 x 73.7 x 45.7 cm.) Note: On his 80th birthday Tony Duquette’s Malibu ranch burned to the ground, destroying 21 structures and much of Duquette’s collection of antiques and his own original works of art. Armand Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, 1997Jeff Schuerholz spent close to 50 years serving Los Angeles, from pioneering Melrose to developing the Los Angeles fixture that was Fat Chance. His connection to the stars, "including David Bowie, Jocelyn Wildenstein, and everyone in between,” generated enthusiasm and started new trends in the design world. Schuerholz says his “dream as a kid was always to do something that would involve people from all over the globe.” Fat Chance could be seen in dozens of Hollywood movies over the past four decades, including "Dreamgirls."
