Description
Gorgeous hand painted Extra Large Meissen Oval Serving Platter in a magical and Romantic Rose Floral pattern circa 1900. It Features the Coveted Blue Crossed-Swords on the underside of the platter which are Unmistakeably Meissen Marks. A little History: In the 17th Century, all of europe was in the thrall of Chinese Porcelain. With pure white biscuit, its unique malleability, and its magnificent decoration, it exceeded every other ceramic of the era both in terms of quality and finesse. Asian porcealin was so valuable and rare, that it was said to have magical properties. During the reign of Augustus the Strong, elector of Saxony, a porcelain afficianado bar none, he spared no effort or expense to acquiring sought-after porcelain pieces. He employed alchemists, miners and smelters to test the behavior of Saxon clays when fired. After years of experimentation, there was success in producing red stoneware or Jaspis porcelain. On January 15th 1708. the first European white porcelain was produced (by adding white kaolin to the red clay) and fired. Formula at hand, Augustus the Strong's great dream began to take shape - European hard paste porcelain was now a REALITY! On June 6th 1710, Augustus the Strong established the first European porcelain manufactory entitled the "Royal Polish and Electoral Saxon Porcelain Manufactory". The Albrechtsburg in Meissen would remain the production facility for more than 150 years. In order to signify the exceptional quality of Meissen porcelain and ensure its authenticity, (once other production facilities learned the secret) the signature Crossed Swords, taken from the coat of arms of the Electorate of Saxony, was introduced in 1722, making it one of the oldest continuosly used trademards in the world.
