Notes: Largely a self-taught artist, Edgar Payne earned acclaim for his plein-air landscape paintings of the American west and California. Born in rural Missouri, Payne grew up roaming the Ozark Mountains where he developed a deep appreciation of the natural wilderness. In 1912, he married artist Elsie Palmer and a few years later the couple moved to California, where he became part of the emerging artist colony in Laguna Beach, and the founding president of the Laguna Beach Art Association.
