He attended Boys Central high school, which he played center for the 1952 Central High School State A champions football team.
Herb started his career in the appliance business and was employed with his uncle Tom Kirby appliance until 1971, then he opened his own business Herberts appliances. He was part of the uptown business community for over 49 years. His fascination for antiques came the memories of items that he remembered in his parents and grandparents home. Many of the items in his estate have been passed down from previous generations.

Chinese Qing Dynasty Period, JiaQing blue and white garden motif porcelain bowl. Potted with a shallow body, slight deep, thick and bulbous body, with angled cavetto elevated the steep sides upward flaring mouth rim, raised on a small round, with slight concave footing. The exterior decorated with hand-painting in clean white under glazed base color which contrast against the cobalt blue fine color, depicted of many child in various pursuit on the garden palace with flowers blooms below dense tree. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned.
