Description
A NATIVE AMERICAN PAINTED BUFFALO SUNDANCE CEREMONY ROBE, PROBABLY BLACKFOOT, CIRCA 1890, black, red, blue, and green pigments on buffalo hide, stitch mounted, linen backed. 62" x 56" An abundance of geometric mountains, earth, sky, sun, moon and geographical symbols separated by blank space. A pair of bison horns is centered by a star wheel. A generalization of the history is that women often painted geometric patterns, while men painted figural "visions," each having deep spiritual meaning to the wearer.
Condition
Apparent repairs/restorations and support threading throughout, some old and some new, stains, burnt/darkened area near center, tears throughout, losses, dust, fading and flaking of pigment. Use of sewing machine for some repairs. Unframed.
