AN AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY SLANT FRONT DESK, GODDARD-TOWNSEND SCHOOL, LIKELY NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND, 1760s-1790s, the New England style rectangular open dovetailed top over a slant front with old willow brass escutcheon falls open over two sliding arms to reveal a central locking cupboard door flanked by four cubby holes with serpentine divides over two blocked drawers flanked by two banks of three drawers topped by satiny rippling shell fans carved before a generous writing space, surmounting four cascading drawers with cockbead faces resting on a molded base and raised on ogee bracket feet. Apparent repairs, good restoration, replaced locks and hardware sometime in both 19th and early 20th century. Screw repairs to foot, backboards replaced and were originally dovetailed, drawer interior wood replaced, old exposure to woodworm, one pull out arm recesses too far, some expected wear to hinges with cracks in these areas of hardware tightened too tight, dust, debris, stains and expected wear, scratches, dings, minor loss and refurbish throughout.
