Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Honduras, Ca 550 to 900 CE. A classic Honduras Mayan underworld cylinder. Ceramic vessel shows image of three splayed frogs, background done in black, indicating piece is a representation of the underworld and often a transformational vessel. These frogs have very human characteristics; wide-bodied with painted red mouths and eyes. Interestingly, the facial features and hands have been incised outlining the details and giving them an almost three-dimensional appearance. A horizontal red line at the top and bottom in red frames the piece. 6-1/2"H x 5"D.
