Description
"Sebastião Salgado (born February 8, 1944) is a Brazilian social documentary photographer and photojournalist. He is known for his stunning black and white photographs that focus on human struggles, the natural world, and social issues. Salgado studied economics before becoming a photographer, but he left his job as an economist in 1973 to pursue a career in photography. Over the years, he has traveled extensively, documenting the lives of people in remote and often dangerous places, such as war-torn countries and regions affected by famine, poverty, and environmental degradation. Salgado's photographs are characterized by their stark beauty and powerful emotional impact. His images of the Serra Pelada gold mine in Brazil, for example, show the grueling work conditions and exploitation of workers in the mine, while his series Workers captures the dignity and humanity of laborers around the world. Salgado has received numerous awards for his photography, including the Prince of Asturias Award for Arts in 1998, and has published several acclaimed photography books, including Workers and Genesis. He is also a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and has been active in promoting environmental and social causes through his photography.
