Description
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist who is now recognized as a pioneer of abstract art, predating well-known abstract artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich. She grew up in Stockholm and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm.Af Klint's earlier works were mainly traditional landscapes and portraits, but in 1906, she began working on what she called "The Paintings for the Temple," a series of abstract works that she believed were inspired by spiritual sources. Af Klint was deeply interested in spiritualism, theosophy, and the occult, and she believed that her paintings were a means of communicating with higher powers. Her abstract works are characterized by colorful, organic shapes, geometric forms, and symbolic imagery. She often used unusual color combinations and incorporated esoteric symbols, such as spirals, circles, and triangles, into her paintings.Af Klint's abstract works were not exhibited publicly during her lifetime, as she believed that the world was not ready for them. Her work only gained recognition after her death in 1944, when her nephew discovered her abstract works and donated them to the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Since then, her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and she is considered a groundbreaking figure in the history of abstract art.
