Item Details
Description
Faith Ringgold (born October 8, 1930) is an American artist, author, and activist. She was born and raised in Harlem, New York City, and is known for her painted story quilts, which combine traditional quilting techniques with painting, embroidery, and storytelling.
Ringgold's work often explores issues of race, gender, and identity, and she has been a vocal advocate for the recognition of African American women artists. She has written and illustrated several children's books, including "Tar Beach," which won the Caldecott Honor in 1992.
Ringgold was an active participant in the civil rights and feminist movements of the 1960s and 1970s, and she continues to use her art as a form of activism. In 2017, at the age of 86, Ringgold became the oldest artist to have a solo exhibition at the Serpentine Galleries in London. Today, she is widely recognized as one of the most important living artists of the African American community.
