Item Details
Description
Letter written by wounded soldier Dan Hitchcock to his wife on April 8, 1865, begins "Dear Wife". After some preliminaries, he writes: "We are having glorious news all the time, and I guess we will wind up the Rebellion this summer. At least "Abe" (who was here and shook hands with us all today) says so. He said he guesses we would all be home by the 4th of July." After discussing what he plans to do when he gets his discharge, he continues: "My views have changed since I came out this time. I think Geo. B. McC(lellan) is a humbug and Grant is the man after all, and Abe is about as good as we could have." The envelope, addressed to his wife at 6 Wall St., New York, is postmarked April 15, '65, Washington D.C., the day Abraham Lincoln died after being shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. the previous evening. Letter is written in pencil on U.S. Christian Commission stationary. Matching envelope addressed in pen. 8" x 10" folded to 8" x 5" with writing on three sides.
