She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, studied at the Massachusetts Normal School, and one of her teachers was the popular artist Joseph DeCamp. She also attended the Boston Museum School, receiving instruction from Edmund Tarbell and Frank Benson. Browne worked in all media and was known for her broad use of color.
