Item Details
Description
Ca. 100-300 AD. A terracotta brick fragment featuring a low relief depiction of a majestic lion with its slender outstretched body. The fragment is a remarkable example of the skill and craftsmanship of ancient Roman artisans. Terracotta bricks were a common building material in ancient Rome, used for a wide range of structures, from humble houses to grand public buildings. The bricks were made by molding clay into the desired shape and then firing them in a kiln to harden them. They were often decorated with reliefs or designs that added a decorative element to the building's façade. The lion depicted on this fragment is a popular motif in Roman art, symbolizing strength, power, and courage. Similar bricks featuring lions have been found throughout the Roman Empire, attesting to the widespread use of this decorative element in ancient architecture. This item comes with a custom-made display stand.Size: L:195mm / W:100mm ; 640gProvenance: Private London collection, B.A.; formerly in pre-2000 European collection.
