Description
Ca. 100-200 AD. A moulded pottery oil lamp characterized by a small spout and a recessed tondo with a central filling hole, along with a small loop handle at the rear and a flat base. A slightly sloping shoulder is separated from the discus by a thick ridge with two symmetrically placed lugs on either side. A distinguishing feature of this lamp is the black mark on the spout, which is indicative of its frequent use. Oil lamps were an essential part of daily life in ancient Rome, providing a reliable source of light after sunset. They were used in homes, temples, and public spaces, and were often decorated with various scenes and motifs that reflected the beliefs and values of Roman society.
