Description
Ca. 100-300 AD. A skillfully engraved carnelian intaglio boasting an impressive depiction of a horse in motion, its mane arranged in elegant swirls, its head turned to its left in a moment of grace, its left hind leg poised as if ready to take off, and its abundant tail flowing behind it. The details of this horse are not only a testament to the mastery of ancient artisans but also evoke the noble spirit of these majestic creatures. But the horse is not alone in this scene. Behind it, an unmistakable Roman legionary standard can be seen attached to a pike. The standard, a symbol of Roman military might and imperial power, was carried into battle by legionaries who fought to defend and expand the Roman Empire. The fact that the standard is featured in the intaglio highlights the importance of military conquest in ancient Rome and the vital role that the army played in shaping the destiny of the empire. Roman intaglios featuring legionary standards were quite common during the Imperial era and were used as a way of displaying one's allegiance to the Roman state and its military might. Rings, like the one, were a popular choice for displaying such imagery, as they could be easily worn on the finger, serving as a constant reminder of one's loyalty to Rome.Size: D: 16.51mm / US: 6 / UK: L 1/2; 1.96gProvenance: Private London collection, UK art market before 2000.
