The reverse is flat and undecorated. Pierced longitudinally for suspension. The scarab beetle was a popular symbol in the art of Ancient Egypt, believed to represent the sun god, Ra. The Ancient Egyptians were a highly interpretive people, who believed that the scarab beetle rolling its ball of dung across the desert mirrored the journey of the sun across the sky from day to night. As the beetle laid its eggs within the dung, it became a symbol of rebirth and regeneration.Size: L:13.2mm / W:9.6mm ; 1.2gProvenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly acquired in early 2000s; previously in 1970s UK collection.
