Description
Large oil on canvas painting after Raphael (Italian, 1483-1520). Reproduction painting depicting his fresco "The Meeting of Leo I and Attila" (1513-1514). Titled here as "Pope Leo I Checking the Advances of Attila and his Huns." With a metal plaque identifying the artwork. The number 2 is painted along the lower left corner. The original fresco is located in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. It is part of a series of rooms now known as the Stanze di Raffaello; this work is in the Stanza di Eliodoro, named after his fresco "The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple."
Provenance: Joseph Burnett, Southborough, Massachusetts; Donated from previous to San Francisco State University, 1930, displayed in their library until the 1970s.

Condition
Dust collected to the surface. Craquelure and light undulation throughout. There are several scattered areas of minute paint losses, particularly to the right of the painting. Along the extreme edges, there is white unidentified residue collected. Along the upper and lower margins, there are areas of paint and canvas loss; to the upper right margin, there is an area, approximately 7 in, that does not fit the frame; please see the listing image. Along the same area, there is a vertical rip, measuring 1 inch. To the center of the upper margin, there is an approx. 3 in that the canvas is ripped. Through the ripped canvas, it is visible that the canvas has been mended. To the upper left quadrant, there is a 1 1/2 in long area with an unstable surface. To the lower left corner, there is a 2 in long canvas rip. To the lower right margin, there is an area with paint loss, possibly due to liquid damage. Around the area, there are white liquid splashes visible; to the center of the painting, there are minute liquid splashes as well; please see the listing image. Not visible sign of restoration under UV light. Along the verso, the canvas is heavily toned and has a soiling along the upper margin. Heavy wear to the frame. Stretcher's keys are attached to the frame.
