Belon (Pierre) Les Observations de Plusieurs Singularitez & Choses Memorables, trouvées en Grece, Asie, Iudée,Egypte, Arabie..., title with charming woodcut border featuring satyrs and sphinxes, woodcut initials and head-pieces, lacking folding woodcut view of Sinai but with woodcut view of Alexandria and numerous woodcut illustrations of flora, fauna and Middle Eastern towns in text, privilege leaf at end, a few small stains but generally a very good copy, with 18th century ink inscriptions concerning the author and his legacy on front and rear free endpapers, manuscript index of birds on front free endpaper, bookplate of W.H.Mullens, contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt, rubbed, joints split, corners and spine ends a little worn, [Adams B563; Nissen ZBI 304; cf. Atabey 93, the same but dated 1554], small 4to, Paris, Guillaume Cavellat, 1555.
***The author was one of the first explorer naturalists and the work contains much accurate information concerning the animals, birds and flora of the Middle East, including a crocodile, giraffe, chameleon, and (less accurately) a small dragon..
