UNIQUE RUSSIAN SILVER PEACOCK, BOXed, PAVEL OVCHINNIKOV
Russian silver peacock featuring a blue and green enamel body decorated with enameled wings with filigree feather tips. Peacock flaunts his flaring, filigree tail feathers embellished with blue an orange enameled beads and stands atop a textured base while bearing the Russian royal emblem from a chain in his beak. The item is in carved wooden box.
HALLMARKS: '84' silver standard, '1882' for years, 'PO' in Cyrillic for Pavel Akimovich Ovchinnikov - famous gold and silver master, official Romanov court supplier - please see information below.
DIMENSIONS: Peacock: 6.5 x 4 x 4.75 inches (16.5 x 12 x 10.2 cm). Box: 9 x 6.25 x 7.25 inches (23 x 16 x 18.4 cm). Weight: 213 grams.

HISTORY: Pavel Akimovich Ovchinnikov famous gold and silver master, official Romanov court supplier founded his Moscow firm in 1853. He was the first Russian silver maker to embrace the pan-Slavic revival style, and in 1868 nearly two de-cades before Faberge, the firm received the title of court supplier, allowing it to incorporate the imperial double eagle in its trademark. Pavel Ovchinnikov appointed official purveyor to the future Tsar Alexander III (1865), King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy (1873), Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich (1878) and King Christian IX of Denmark (1888). Awarded the Legion d'honneur (1867) and the Order of the Iron Crown (1873). Founded a school for 130 goldsmiths and silversmiths (1871). Opened a factory and shops in St. Petersburg at 35 Bolshaya Morskaya Street (1873) and the former premises of Sazikov at 29 Bolshaya Morskaya Street (1900). Member of the Moscow City Duma (1876-88).
