Description
English Carved Mahogany Secretary Bookcase, late 19th c., the stepped crown over double mullioned glazed doors over a slant lid desk with an inset gilt tooled leather writing surface in front of a fitted interior with eight drawers and four cubbyholes, above a frieze drawer and three graduated drawers, on a plinth base with bracket feet, H.- 94 in., W.- 46 in., D.- 21 in.
Condition
The condition of the bookcase is consistent with age and use, exhibiting numerous age-related flaws. Dents and scratches are present throughout the piece, with a particular concentration on the exterior of the slant lid desk. Two keys are present, and all locks are functional. On the right side of the lid there is noticeable splitting in the wood, as well as a 16 inch long crack on the left edge. The wood element attached to the exterior glass is lifting and requires repair or replacement of the adhesive. The right pull for the slide-out piece below the extendable lid is not present. This is a handsome piece that would benefit from a thorough cleaning and restoration.
