Description
A vintage carved wood mahogany 'Gunpowder Plot' carved low table on six legs having a carved border depicting the story of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 in England. On each corner having a different crest shield with latin script, one being an unknown family crest with single chevron and three dog heads reading 'Legi Regi Fidelis (Faithful to the King and the Law)', the other being an unknown family crest depicting a castle framed by two shield and the initials 'JG' reading 'Virtutis Praemium Honor (Honor is the Reward of Virtue)'. Additional bas-reliefs along edges of table depict warriors in combat and geometrically shaped faces. Provenance: from the estate of renowned astronomer Edward A. Lilley (American, 1928-2020). A prodigious Harvard educated scientist, Lilley made significant contributions to the Mariner II, NASA's first planetary mission.
