Item Details
Description
William A. Slaughter (American, 1923-2003). Landscape painting (Texas bluebonnets) - oil on canvas, 1974. Signed and dated at bottom center. A beautiful Texas landscape painting by William A. Slaughter, featuring Slaughter's famous Texas bluebonnets blossoming along the prairie in a carpet of blue, verdant oak trees, and a rambling stream, with rolling hills beyond and a glorious azure sky graced by billowing clouds above. The painting demonstrates Slaughter's keen eye for color - dazzling us with myriad shades of blue and green - and impressionistic light effects. Remarkably, Slaughter was primarily self taught; however, he had an innate penchant for realism and developed his talent through patience and diligence. A stunning landscape painting by Bill Slaughter, mounted in an attractive custom frame. Size (painting): 12" L x 16" W (30.5 cm x 40.6 cm) Size (frame): 16.8" L x 20.875" W (42.7 cm x 53 cm)

The bluebonnet is the Texas state flower, and every spring, breathtaking fields of these wildflowers grace the hill country during bluebonnet season. A bit of history: In 1901, the National Society of Colonial Dames of America convinced the Texas legislature that the bluebonnet should be Texas' state flower - its name honoring Texas pioneer women.

About the artist: William A. Slaughter was a well-known 20th century landscape painter as well as a minister. Following his service in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, Slaughter became an ordained Lutheran pastor, serving in Texas as well as Mexico. While in Mexico, Slaughter recognized and began to pursue his passion for painting - creating figurative compositions, still lifes, and landscapes. In 1964, he moved to Dallas, Texas and eventually left the ministry in order to pursue painting full time. Slaughter's art has been exhibited in all 50 states and at least 16 countries. He won several awards from the Artists and Craftsmen's Association of Dallas during the late 1960s and early 1970s, and among his proudest achievements was a commission to design stain glass windows for The King of Glory Lutheran Church in Dallas, Texas.

Provenance: private Deer Park, Texas, USA collection, aquired by inheritance from Grandmother
