British or American School. Untitled oil on canvas, 19th century. A stunning painting depicting a beautiful Pre-Raphaelite woman with brunette hair and a peachy complexion, wearing a long blue dress with ruffled short sleeves and billowing cascades of fabric, and gazing upon the burning chalice she holds in her right hand, perhaps indicating that she is the allegory of faith and religion. The background consists of a castle silhouette with dreamy skies of soft pink and azure hues above. A mesmerizing painting delineated in the Pre-Raphaelite style with the Pre-Raphaelites' characteristic blend of a Medieval penchant for color and a Renaissance adoration of detail, mounted in a custom frame that is embellished with a finely delineated floral motif and a beaded motif along the innermost molding. What's more, the inner moldings of the frame are liberally embellished with silver leaf. Painting has been professionally conserved. Imagery and hues are vivid. There are two patches indicative of repairs on verso. Age wear to stretchers and darkening to verso of canvas commensurate with age. Frame is elaborately decorated with a floral motif and an inner beaded molding. Frame has a few scuffs and losses to peripheries and high pointed areas as shown but is otherwise quite lovely. Fit with suspension wire. Pigments have been tested via x-ray flourescence and are consistent with those of the period. In addition, the finish of the frame has been tested via x-ray flourescence and the inner moldings of the frame are embellished with silver leaf.
