Item Details
Description
George Dureau (1930-2014) was an American artist and photographer known for his depictions of the human form, particularly male nudes. He was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, and lived there for most of his life. Dureau's work often explored themes of beauty, sexuality, and identity, and he is considered to be one of the most important figurative artists of the 20th century.
Dureau studied at the John McCrady Art School in New Orleans and later at the Art Students League of New York. He worked in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. His photographic work gained him national attention, and he was included in several group exhibitions in the United States and abroad.
Dureau's work was often controversial, as it challenged conventional ideas about beauty and sexuality. However, he was highly respected in the art world and his work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
