Sebastião Salgado is a Brazilian documentary photographer and photojournalist. He was born in 1944 in Aimorés, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Salgado began his career as an economist, but he became interested in photography in the 1970s and eventually decided to pursue it full-time.
Salgado's work is known for its social and political commentary, and he has documented some of the world's most pressing issues, including poverty, famine, and war. His photography is often described as strikingly beautiful and emotionally powerful, and his images have been published in numerous books and exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.
Some of Salgado's most famous projects include his photographs of workers around the world in "Workers" (1993), his documentation of the mass migration of people from Africa to Europe in "Migrations" (2000), and his exploration of the impact of globalization in "Genesis" (2013). Salgado has won numerous awards for his work, including the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Grant and the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography.
In addition to his photography, Salgado is also known for his conservation work. He and his wife founded the Instituto Terra, an organization dedicated to reforestation and environmental education in Brazil.
