Description
"World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It involved the majority of the world's nations, including all of the great powers, organized into two opposing military alliances: the Allies (primarily composed of the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union) and the Axis powers (primarily composed of Germany, Italy, and Japan).
The war was sparked by the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany in September 1939, and quickly spread throughout Europe and Asia. The war had devastating consequences, including the deaths of over 70 million people, many of whom were civilians. It also resulted in significant social and economic changes, including the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as global superpowers and the formation of the United Nations.
The war ended with the unconditional surrender of Germany on May 8, 1945, and the dropping of atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively. The use of atomic bombs and the resultant destruction and loss of life led to Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945, marking the end of World War II.
