Item Details
Description
Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist who rose to prominence in the New York art scene in the 1980s. He was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1958 and studied at the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh before moving to New York City in 1978. Haring is known for his bold, graphic style and his use of pop art and graffiti techniques in his work. He often used simple, cartoon-like figures to address social and political issues such as AIDS, drug addiction, and apartheid. His work was often displayed in public spaces, such as subway stations and street corners, and he became widely known for his "subway drawings," which he created using white chalk on the black paper that covered the advertising spaces in New York City's subway stations. Haring died of AIDS-related complications in 1990 at the age of 31, but his influence can still be seen in contemporary art and popular culture today. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, and he is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century.
