Description
Edward Steichen (1879-1973) was an American photographer, painter, and curator. He was born in Luxembourg, but his family moved to the United States when he was a child. Steichen is regarded as one of the most important photographers of the 20th century, and he had a profound influence on the development of modern photography.
Steichen began his career as a painter, but he soon turned to photography and became one of the pioneers of modernist photography. He worked as a photographer for Condé Nast in the 1920s and 1930s, and his images of fashion, celebrities, and cultural icons helped to define the era. He was also a renowned portrait photographer, and his portraits of famous figures such as Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, and Winston Churchill are still widely admired today.
Later in his career, Steichen became a curator and worked for the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He curated many influential exhibitions, including "The Family of Man," which is widely considered to be one of the most important photography exhibitions in history.
