Description
Eloise Polk McGill , 1868-1939,Oil /canvas on board , measures 12" x 7.5" , w/frame 12" x 16" was born in Independence, Texas. She was a direct descendant of President James Knox Polk, and a grandniece of Judge R. E. B. Baylor, the founder of Baylor University, in Waco, Texas. She studied in San Antonio with Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, and in New York City with William Merritt Chase. She also studied landscape painting at the Cape Cod School of Art, in Massachusetts, and with Robert Reid in Paris, France. McGill was a member of the Southern States Art League; San Antonio Art League; and Texas Fine Arts Association. From 1888 through the late 1920s, McGill participated in the Edgar B. Davis Competition at the Witte Art Museum, in San Antonio. She later started her own art school, naming it the Edgar B. Davis School of Wildflower Painting.
