Description

Ludwig Vierthaler (German, 1875-1967) for Winhart & Co., Munich, circa 1904, apparently unmarked, jardiniere or planter in the form of a two-handled bowl, the hammered copper body decorated with repousse pine cones and needles with Jugendstil brass handles flaring up from the body, together with blackened iron stand, possibly British. 14" H x 17" W (the jardiniere) 43" H (with stand). Provenance: From a private Rye, NY collection. Note: The offered lot was originally offered in two forms; as a jardiniere, and also as a covered punchbowl which can be seen in an article on the Muenchener Kunstgewerbehaus (Munich Arts & Crafts House) shop in the journal Kunst und Handwerk from 1904. Ludwig Vierthaler (German, 1875-1967) studied at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich, and studied under Bruno Paul in Berlin. After a period at Tiffany Studios in New York, he returned to his native Germany to become a central figure in the Munich Secession, and his best early design work was for the firm of Winhart & Co. In 1915, he took a position at the Applied Arts School in Hanover, and became a full professor there in 1921.
